How to cancel or get a refund on online subscriptions
Short answer: Find out who bills you (Apple, Google Play, Amazon, PayPal, or the company itself), cancel there before the next renewal, then request a refund through that same platform. If the merchant won't help, contact your card issuer as a last resort.
1. Find the subscription
- Apple: On iPhone or iPad, open Settings → your name → Subscriptions. If you can't find it, search your email for "receipt from Apple" or "invoice from Apple" to see which Apple Account was charged. (Apple: Cancel a subscription)
- Google Play: On Android, go to Subscriptions in Google Play, signed in to the Google Account that has the subscription. (Google Play: Cancel, pause, or change a subscription)
- Amazon: Go to Your Memberships and Subscriptions to see active, canceled, and expired subscriptions with renewal dates and prices. (Amazon: Manage subscriptions)
- PayPal: Settings → Payments → Subscriptions and saved businesses (or Automatic Payments) → select the merchant. (PayPal: Automatic payments)
- Bank or card statement: If there's no app-store receipt, Apple notes you may have subscribed through another company—check your statement to see who bills you, then contact that company.
2. Cancel before it renews
- Apple: Tap the subscription, then Cancel Subscription. No Cancel button (or a red expiration message) means it's already canceled. Cancel a trial at least 24 hours before it ends.
- Google Play: Select the subscription and tap Cancel subscription. Uninstalling the app does not cancel it. After canceling you keep access until the end of the paid period.
- Amazon: In Your Memberships and Subscriptions, choose Manage Subscription → Cancel Subscription. To end Prime, go to your Prime membership → Update, Cancel, and more. (Amazon: End your Prime membership)
- PayPal: On the merchant's automatic-payment page you can cancel the automatic payment.
3. Ask for a refund
- Apple: Sign in to reportaproblem.apple.com → "I'd like to" → "Request a refund" → choose a reason and the item → Submit. Expect an update in 24–48 hours. (Apple: Request a refund)
- Google Play: Google says contacting the app developer is often the quickest route, since most apps are made by third parties. Report unauthorized charges within 120 days. (Google Play refund policies)
- Amazon Prime: Paid members who haven't used their benefits are eligible for a full refund of the current period, processed in 3–5 business days.
- Anywhere else: Contact the merchant directly with the charge date and amount.
4. Last resort: dispute the charge
If you canceled and the merchant still won't fix a charge, contact your card issuer or bank about disputing it. Keep cancellation confirmations and receipts as evidence.
