How to return a Best Buy gift without a receipt (2026)
Short answer: Return the gift in a Best Buy store and you get store credit for the purchase price. If you mail it back instead, Best Buy credits the person who bought it and emails them. With no proof of purchase at all, the return may be denied or limited, it's store credit only, and sales tax isn't refunded. Watch the clock: most products get just 15 days from when the buyer received them, and Best Buy hasn't posted 2026 holiday dates (checked Oct 21, 2026).

2026 holiday return window: Not posted yet
Not announced yet: check back
Best Buy's return policy page, as we fetched it on Oct 21, 2026, shows no 2026 holiday return period. Until it posts one, the standard windows apply, and they're short: 15 days for most products, counted from the day the buyer received it. A gift bought in early December can be out of its window by Christmas.
Returning a Best Buy gift with a gift receipt or proof of purchase
- Bring the gift, all its accessories and packaging, and the packing slip or receipt if you have it, to any Best Buy store.
- For a gift you return in a store, Best Buy gives you store credit for the purchase price.
- If you return a gift by mail, Best Buy credits the gift purchaser and notifies them by email.
- Gifts bought from a Marketplace Seller on BestBuy.com: the purchaser is credited and notified by email.
Returning a Best Buy gift without a receipt
- Returns lacking proof of purchase may require an email address, will be store credit, may be denied or limited, and state sales tax and fees aren't refunded.
- The return window still runs from the day the buyer received the product, so an old gift may be out of time even if the store can find it.
What you get back: store credit, gift card or refund?
Store credit for the purchase price of a gift returned in store. A mailed gift return goes back to the buyer, not to you.
ID and no-receipt limits
- Best Buy's policy page asks for an email address on no-proof returns. It doesn't mention a photo ID requirement.
- Items must be like new. Damaged, scratched or incomplete returns can be denied or have a deduction for missing parts.
- Restocking fees still apply to opened items: $45 on activatable devices (not prepaid phones) and 15% on drones, cameras, lenses, camcorders, projectors and other listed items. No fee if unopened, or in AL, CO, HI, IA, MS, OH, OK and SC.
Return windows that apply to gifts
The last column shows the deadline for a gift bought (or, where the store counts from delivery, delivered) on Dec 15, 2026.
| Gift | Best Buy's rule | Bought Dec 15, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Most products (standard customers) | 15 days from receipt | Dec 30, 2026 |
| Most products (bought by a My Best Buy Plus or Total member; not Marketplace) | 60 days | Feb 13, 2027 |
| Phones, cellular tablets, hotspots, cellular wearables | 14 days | Dec 29, 2026 |
| Verizon activatable devices | 30 days | Jan 14, 2027 |
| Christmas and Halloween decorations | 15 days (all customers) | Dec 30, 2026 |
| Third-party gift cards, prepaid cards, digital codes, Final Sale items | Not returnable | Not returnable |
Example dates add calendar days to Dec 15, 2026 (Dec 16 is day 1). If a store counts the purchase day itself as day 1, the deadline is a day earlier. Each store says whether the clock starts at purchase or at delivery; for a gift, that's when the giver bought it or it arrived, not when you opened it. Go by the date on the gift receipt or order.
Tips before you go
- If the giver is a My Best Buy Plus or Total member, the 60-day window applies to the gift, which gives you far more time.
- Remove your data and unlink connected devices from any cloud account before you return them.
- Opened movies, music, games and software can only be exchanged for an identical item.
