How to return a gift without a receipt
Short answer: You can often return a gift without the original sales receipt, but you'll usually get store credit or a gift card, not cash. A gift receipt, packing slip, registry lookup, or order number is the easiest path. With nothing at all, many stores still accept the return with a photo ID and credit at the lowest recent sale price—or they may refuse it.

What usually works (in order)
- Gift receipt or packing slip. Best option: proves the purchase without exposing the price to the recipient.
- Registry or wish-list lookup. Baby, wedding, and similar registries (and Amazon Gift Lists) often let non-owners return within a longer window—Amazon lists 180 days for Wedding Registry purchases by non-owners and 365 days for Baby Registry purchases by non-owners.
- Card, app, or order-number lookup. Kohl's, Target, Home Depot, Walmart and others can often find the sale without a paper receipt.
- True no-receipt return. Expect store credit/gift card, possible ID, and sometimes the lowest recent selling price.

Tips before you go
- Ask the giver for a gift receipt or order number before you visit the store—they can often pull it from email or their account without spoiling the surprise (Amazon: Share Gift Receipt from Your Orders).
- Bring a government photo ID for no-receipt returns.
- Expect store credit, not cash, when the original payment can't be verified.
- Watch holiday windows. Several stores extend returns for fall/winter purchases—see holiday return deadlines 2026.
Can I return a gift without a receipt?
Often yes, but usually as store credit or a gift card—not cash to the original payment. Stores that describe no-receipt or gift-receipt returns in our data include Target, Walmart, Kohl's, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods, Dick's, GameStop, Whole Foods, and others. Bring a gift receipt when you have one; otherwise ask for a purchase lookup or expect ID requirements.
What is a gift receipt and why does it help?
A gift receipt proves the purchase without showing the price. Many stores (for example Dick's, GameStop, HomeGoods, Marshalls, TJ Maxx, and Whole Foods in our summaries) treat a gift receipt as proof of purchase but often refund as store credit or a gift card rather than cash.
Do I need photo ID to return a gift?
Frequently, when there is no receipt or lookup. Our retailer pages note ID requirements for no-receipt returns at Target, Walmart, Dick's, HomeGoods, Marshalls, JCPenney, Michaels, and others. Gift receipts may still avoid the strictest no-receipt rules at some stores.
How do Amazon gift returns work?
Amazon's Gift Returns Center lets recipients return items marked as a gift using the 17-digit order number from the packing slip or digital gift receipt. Recipients get an Amazon.com Gift Card after Amazon receives the return (not an instant refund). Gifts over $2,000 can only be refunded to the purchaser's original payment.
