Holiday gift return guide 2026

Short answer: Get a gift receipt or order number from the giver if you can. Without one, most big stores still take the gift back, but for store credit or a gift card, often at the lowest recent price, and usually with a photo ID. Walmart, Kohl's and Macy's give most 2026 holiday purchases until Jan 31, 2027, and TJ Maxx until Jan 25, 2027 (Feb 4 online). Amazon, Target, Best Buy and Apple haven't posted 2026 holiday dates yet, and Lowe's wants Christmas items back by Dec 25.

How gift receipts work

A gift receipt proves the purchase without showing the price. At most stores it gets the recipient an exchange or store credit, not a refund to the giver's card.
Online orders have their own "gift receipt": the packing slip or order number. Amazon uses the 17-digit order number from the packing slip or digital gift receipt. Target accepts a gift receipt or packing slip, and the giver can text or email you a gift receipt.
Registries get longer windows. Amazon gives non-owner purchases from a Wedding Registry 180 days and from a Baby Registry 365 days. Target gives Baby and Wedding registries up to one year after the event date. Kohl's gives verified Baby Registry gifts up to 365 days.
Gift receipts don't stretch the window. The return clock still runs from the giver's purchase (or delivery) date.

Returning a gift with no receipt

Ask for a lookup first. Kohl's can find a sale by order number, Kohl's Rewards, credit card or app barcode. Lowe's by order number, payment card or digital wallet, phone number or MyLowe's account. Target by Target Circle Card or major credit card. Those lookups need the giver's details, but they can turn a no-receipt return into a normal one.
Expect credit at a lower price. Kohl's uses the lowest discounted 13-week sale price, Macy's the lowest selling price in the last 90 days, and Home Depot the lowest advertised price.
Bring a government photo ID. Walmart, Target, Home Depot and TJ Maxx require one for no-receipt returns. Kohl's and Lowe's may ask for one. Macy's may ask for your name and address.
Know the hard no's. Lowe's doesn't accept returns without valid proof of purchase. Costco's and Apple's policies don't describe no-receipt gift returns at all.
Repeat no-receipt returns get tracked. Walmart limits how many non-receipted returns you can make, and Kohl's, Home Depot, TJ Maxx and Lowe's run returns through refund verification systems.

Extended holiday return windows by store (2026)

Amazon: Not posted yet. Amazon's Return Policy page, as we fetched it on Oct 21, 2026, shows no 2026 holiday return dates. Until Amazon posts them, plan on the standard windows, which run from the delivery date, not from when the gift was unwrapped. The return-by date shown when you start the return is the one Amazon holds you to.
Walmart: Announced. Walmart's return policy (updated Oct 9, 2026) says most items bought Oct 1 through Dec 31 are returnable until Jan 31. The page doesn't print a year; for 2026 holiday gifts that's Jan 31, 2027. Walmart says exceptions may apply and names wireless phones, protection plans, major appliances, Dyson products, and select seasonal and luxury goods.
Target: Not posted yet. Target's returns help page, as we fetched it on Oct 21, 2026, states no 2026 holiday return extension. It only says holiday and limited-time-only collections "may have modified return policies." Until Target posts dates, the standard windows apply, counted from the purchase (or, for Target.com, from delivery or pickup).
Best Buy: Not posted yet. Best Buy's return policy page, as we fetched it on Oct 21, 2026, shows no 2026 holiday return period. Until it posts one, the standard windows apply, and they're short: 15 days for most products, counted from the day the buyer received it. A gift bought in early December can be out of its window by Christmas.
Costco: None stated. Costco's return policy answer (published Oct 2, 2025; fetched Oct 21, 2026) states no holiday extension. Most merchandise doesn't need one, because Costco's Risk-Free 100% Satisfaction Guarantee sets no fixed window. Electronics are the exception: 90 days from the date the member received them.
Kohl's: Announced. Kohl's 2026 Holiday Extended Return Policy: Kohl's merchandise bought Oct 4 to Dec 30, 2026 can be returned through Jan 31, 2027, and that includes Premium Electronics and Watches, Jewelry, and Mattresses. Sephora at Kohl's purchases made Oct 30 to Dec 30, 2026 also have until Jan 31, 2027.
Macy's: Announced. Macy's Holiday 2026 Return Policy: most merchandise bought at Macy's or macys.com from Oct 5 to Dec 31, 2026 can be returned until Jan 31, 2027. Items sold by Dyson and Mac Duggal are excluded and keep the 30-day window, and Last Act merchandise is final sale.
Home Depot: None stated. Home Depot's return policy, as we fetched it on Oct 21, 2026, states no holiday return extension. Its holiday rule is a shorter one: since July 7, 2026, Halloween and holiday decor must be returned within 30 days, unused and with proof of purchase.
Lowe's: None stated. Lowe's return policy, as we fetched it on Oct 21, 2026, states no holiday extension. Its holiday rule goes the other way: Christmas and Halloween items must be returned on or before the day of the holiday, and items bought after the holiday are final sale.
Apple: Not posted yet. Apple's Returns & Refunds page, as we fetched it on Oct 21, 2026, shows only the standard 14-day policy and no 2026 holiday dates. Until Apple posts dates, plan on 14 days from the date the buyer received the item, which can end before Christmas for an early-December gift.
TJ Maxx: Announced. TJ Maxx's 2026 holiday policy: store purchases made between Oct 4 and Dec 24, 2026 may be returned through Jan 25, 2027, and online purchases from the same dates through Feb 4, 2027. The normal policy applies to purchases made Dec 26, 2026 or later. TJ Maxx adds that gift returns with a receipt get store credit.

The short windows that catch gift recipients

Example dates add calendar days to Dec 15, 2026 (Dec 16 is day 1). If a store counts the purchase day itself as day 1, the deadline is a day earlier. Each store says whether the clock starts at purchase or at delivery; for a gift, that's when the giver bought it or it arrived, not when you opened it. Go by the date on the gift receipt or order.

Apple (bought direct): 14 days from receipt. Bought Dec 15, 2026 → due Dec 29, 2026.
Best Buy: 15 days for most products (60 if the giver is a My Best Buy Plus or Total member), 14 for phones and other activatable devices. Received Dec 15 → due Dec 30, 2026.
Target: Apple, Beats and phones 14 days (Dec 29, 2026), other electronics 30 days (Jan 14, 2027).
Amazon: new Apple-brand products 15 days from delivery (Dec 30, 2026); most items 30 days (Jan 14, 2027).
Home Depot: holiday decor 30 days; gas generators, portable heaters and a few other categories 7 days (Dec 22, 2026). All of them must be unused, and some must also be factory-sealed.
Lowe's: Christmas items on or before Dec 25, 2026. Walmart: most wireless phones 14 days, excluded from its holiday extension.

Gift card refunds: what you get back

Returning a gift usually gets you a store's own card: an Amazon.com Gift Card (after Amazon receives the item), a Target GiftCard, a Walmart Gift Card or an Apple Gift Card. Best Buy, Macy's and Home Depot give store credit, Kohl's gives Kohl's Merchandise Credit, and TJ Maxx gives merchandise credit.
Paid with a gift card? Target credits it back as a new Target eGiftCard, Best Buy as a new Best Buy Gift Card, and Lowe's as in-store credit.
Store credit has strings. Target's merchandise return card only works in Target stores, and TJ Maxx's credit needs an ID that matches the name it was issued under.

Can I return a Christmas gift without a receipt?

At most big stores, yes, but you'll usually get store credit or a gift card, not cash. Kohl's: purchases Oct 4–Dec 30, 2026, including electronics, watches, jewelry and mattresses, through Jan 31, 2027. Macy's: most merchandise bought Oct 5–Dec 31, 2026 until Jan 31, 2027. TJ Maxx: purchases Oct 4–Dec 24, 2026 through Jan 25, 2027 in stores and Feb 4, 2027 online. Amazon, Target, Best Buy and Apple haven't posted 2026 dates. Costco, Home Depot and Lowe's state no extension.

Do I get cash back if I return a gift?

Rarely. With a gift receipt, stores give the recipient credit: an Amazon.com Gift Card, a Target GiftCard, a Walmart Gift Card, an Apple Gift Card, or store or merchandise credit at Best Buy, Macy's, Home Depot and TJ Maxx. A cash or card refund normally goes back to the original payment method, which belongs to the person who bought the gift.

When does the return window start for a gift?

When the giver bought it, or when it was delivered at stores that count from delivery (Amazon, Apple, Best Buy, Target.com). It doesn't start when you open the gift. That's why short windows bite: a Best Buy gift received by the buyer on Dec 15, 2026 is due back by Dec 30, 2026, and an Apple gift by Dec 29.
