How do I return a Christmas gift to Walmart?

Short answer: Bring the gift to any Walmart store with the receipt or Walmart.com order number if you can get it from the giver. Without a receipt, Walmart needs a valid government-issued photo ID, and if its refund verification approves the return you get a Walmart gift card.

Walmart can also try to look up store purchases by the debit/credit card used, or online orders by phone number or email—useful if the giver can come along or share details.
Walmart limits the number and frequency of non-receipted returns.
Major appliances can’t be returned in stores.

Holiday window

Walmart’s policy (updated Oct 9, 2026) says most items bought October 1 through December 31 are returnable until January 31. The page doesn’t print the year; for 2026 holiday purchases that means Jan 31, 2027.
Exceptions include wireless phones, protection plans, major appliances, Dyson products, and select seasonal and luxury goods.

Gifts with shorter windows

Most wireless phones: 14 days.
Consumer electronics, PCs, vacuums, e-bikes/scooters/hoverboards: 30 days.
Major appliances: 2 days (unopened, factory-sealed up to 30 days).
Some opened items are exchange-only (e.g., opened unlocked phones, drones and projectors).
