How do I return a Christmas gift to Amazon?

Short answer: Use Amazon's Gift Returns Center with the 17-digit order number from the packing slip or digital gift receipt. The item must have been marked as a gift, and as the recipient you get an Amazon.com Gift Card once Amazon receives the return.

Details

If you only have a shipping tracking number, Amazon says to contact them; with neither an order ID nor tracking number, the person who bought the gift has to contact Amazon.
Gifts over $2,000 can only be refunded to the purchaser’s original payment method.
Third-party seller items follow the return options that seller offers.

How long you have

Most items: 30 days from delivery, in original or unused condition.
Birthday/Custom Gift List purchases by non-owners: 90 days; Wedding Registry: 180 days; Baby Registry: 365 days.
New Apple-brand items: 15 days.
Not returnable: perishables, customized products, certain digital goods and Final Sale items.

Step by step

Open the Gift Returns Center and sign in (or create an Amazon account).
Enter the 17-digit order number from the packing slip or gift receipt email.
Pick the item, reason and return method, then follow the instructions.
The gift card credit arrives after Amazon receives the item, not instantly.

Have the 17-digit order number ready? Open Amazon's Gift Returns Center (sign-in required). As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.
